SPOT Data

Data Files for Google Earth or Google Maps

In early 2008 Graig received a SPOT transceiver for his birthday mainly so that Jan could keep track of him in near-real-time as he skied out-of-bounds and she stayed home with her recovering knee. So many of Graig's favorite places are now available in great detail from this SPOT page.

If you already have Google Earth installed on your system, you can directly load and view a dataset below by double-clicking the place name. See the text below the table for using a dataset with Google Maps.

In Google Earth, each location is labeled with a string showing seq_#-mm/dd:hh:mm

Google Maps

These dataset will also work with Google Maps but the labels for each point will not display - that capability is not currently available in Google Maps. Follow these steps to load a file into Google Maps:

  1. Right click one of the above files, choose "Save As ..." and save the file someplace on your disk.
  2. Open Google Maps
  3. Click on the My Maps tab at the upper left just below "Google"
  4. Click on Create New Map, then on Import (to the left of the Done button)
  5. In the window that pops up, c lick on Browse, find and select the file you saved in step 1, click on Open, then on Upload from File.
  6. The dataset should load and be displayed. Click on Done. Chose Map, Satellite, or Terrain as desired at the upper right.
  7. Click on the X to the right of the dataset name to remove the data from the My Maps tab.

Note

Most of the SPOT .kml files above were created from the raw, downloaded files using a perl script that reformats the file, sets a different point symbol for Track and OK points, and sets the point name to a more meaningful string.
